Philosophy of practice:
Some of the most important and basic beliefs in the oral health care are being professional, organized, loyal, well prepared, motivated, and multi-tasker, in addition to possess good communication and critical thinking skills. It is very difficult to accomplish all of that. However, practicing and learning from life experiences inside and outside clinic will eventually make me accomplish all of it. Dealing with different patients makes it more challenging but also more exciting. It requires more effort to treat the patient and provide the oral health they need regarding.
My role as a professional in oral health care is educating the patients about the importance of their oral care at home. Demonstrating the proper brushing and flossing techniques are very essential during every dental hygiene visit. In addition to that, assessing that by conducting the gingival index score and plaque score measurement every other visit. Therefore, this will give me the chance to evaluate their oral hygiene on a regular basis and try to improve what they need to work on more. Therefore, when providing a patient care, the most important step is to accomplish their needs every time they visit the dental office. Like I stated earlier, every patients have different needs.
It is very well known that as a dental hygienist, I have a professional obligation towards my patients and the society, and it is providing teeth cleaning, deep scaling and root planning, applying sealants, taking impression, taking radiographic x- rays, and administering nitrous oxide and local anesthesia. Another important aspect is to provide oral health education to prevent mouth infections and diseases. Prevention is more important than the cleaning itself. Another aspect that the dental hygienist should encounter is being always engaged in community service to provide education and treatment for those who lacks the funds that prevented them from receiving dental care.
Respecting the human diversity is very essential. It is essential to provide the same care to the patients even though if they were from different culture and did not speak English. Communication could be a problem but the patient might feel neglected if the hygienist or the dentist did not speak to them and educate them about the treatment that needs to be done. Therefore, having an interpreter that can speak the patient’s language is very important to make the procedure goes smoother and to have an effective treatment as well.
My values and beliefs have changed a lot during my educational experience in dental hygiene. When I first started the dental hygiene program, all my focus was on having great skills for patient care. However, I believe the most important factor is to teach my patient how to properly brush, floss and obtain their oral health care to prevent any infection in their mouth. In addition, building a strong and great relationships with the patients will result in better outcomes.
