Professional and ethical behavior:
I have learned that I have to be professional in all aspect of life.
It is really important to be professional with my patients and listen to their
complains. Therefore, even if patient get mad or upset about our dental care, I
should always remember that patient is my number one priority and I will do my
best to give them the best dental care I can give. Three hours procedure seems
long for a patient but for me is still sometimes not enough. I remember when I
had difficulty time finishing up the procedure because my patient forgot to
take her prophylaxis medication before she come in and she was upset that I told
her that I might not be able to finish up with her that day. However, I tried
to keep everything under control and explained to my patient how her health is
important and that I had to give her the medication and made her to wait for 30
minute just for her won safety. After explaining that to her, patient seemed to be
aware from the consequences and followed the procedure that was giving.
In the second semester, I remember one time I was trying to reach my patient and he did not answer me. However, his wife did. I asked her nicely that I need to speak to her husband. the lady told me why am calling for. I told her nicely that I was not able to tell her any information. The wife got mad and she told me that "I am his wife you can tell me anything". I explained to the lady that is the rule of the VCU school of dentistry and it will be a HIPPA violation if I told her. Therefore, the lady was not really professional to me, but I was able to manage the situation and stick it to the rule.
